A Farewell to Orkut

After ten years of sparking conversations and forging connections, we have decided that it's time for us to start saying goodbye to Orkut. Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut's growth, we've decided to focus our energy and resources on making these other social platforms as amazing as possible for everyone who uses them.
We will shut down Orkut on 30 September 2014. Until then, there will be no impact on you, so you may have time to manage the transition. You can export your profile data, community posts and photos using Google Takeout (available until September 2016). We are preserving an archive of all public communities, which will be available online from 30 September 2014. If you don't want your posts or name to be included in the community archive, you can remove Orkut permanently from your Google account. Please visit our Help Centre for any further details.
It's been a great 10 years, and we apologise to those of you still actively using the service. We hope that you will find other online communities to spark more conversations and build even more connections for the next decade and beyond.

New Top-Level Domain Name Applications Revealed

Historic Milestone for the Internet's Domain Name System

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today revealed who has applied for which generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) names in what is expected to become the largest expansion in the history of the Internet's Domain Name System.

A total of 1,930 new gTLD applications were received during the application period of the new generic Top-Level Domain program.

"We are standing at the cusp of a new era of online innovation," said Rod Beckstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer. "That means new businesses, new marketing tools, new jobs, and new ways to link communities and share information."

Beckstrom made the comments during a London news conference, where it was revealed which organizations have applied for which specific domain names.

Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz noted that the applications will now be subject to a public comment and objection period, and a rigorous, objective and independent evaluation system.

"A 60-day comment period begins today, allowing anyone in the world to submit comments on any application, and the evaluation panels will consider them," said Pritz. "If anyone objects to an application and believes they have the grounds to do so, they can file a formal objection to the application. And they will have seven months to do that."

Of the 1,930 applications received:

   * 66 are geographic name applications.
   * 116 applications are for Internationalized Domain Names, or IDNs, for strings in scripts such as Arabic, Chinese, and Cyrillic.

Applications were received from 60 countries and territories, broken down by ICANN's geographic regions;

   * 911 from North America.
   * 675 from Europe.
   * 303 are from Asia-Pacific.
   * 24 from Latin America and the Caribbean.
   * 17 from Africa.

Beckstrom noted that the applications from Latin America/Caribbean and Africa would be the first gTLDs ever from those regions.

He also pointed out that the new gTLD program is the result of seven years of international consultation and debate among a wide variety of Internet stakeholders.

The City of Columbia is going Google

Editors note:Earlier this week we announced the City of St.Louis is going Google. Today we welcome another guest blogger from Missouri, Mike Matthes, to tell us how he recently moved Columbia to Google Apps for Government. 

I grew up in Chillicothe, Missouri. Until last year, I worked for the City of Des Moines in Iowa for 15 years. When I got the opportunity to move back to my home state and became the City Manager of Columbia, Missouri, I jumped at the chance. Columbia is a boomtown with outstanding quality of life that emphasizes the value of public services for the citizens. I find great joy in serving the public, partnering with our city employees, and supporting them as they work with the community.

After I moved to Columbia, I realized the city was challenged by an antiquated email system that couldn’t keep up with the latest technology trends and our employees’ needs. When my iPad acted as nothing more than a paperweight, I knew we needed a change.  

Columbia is fortunate to have an open-minded City Council and IT Department, so we started looking for a new email solution last fall. When I worked for Des Moines, I became familiar with Google Apps for Government. We chose the Google email and communication platform for 2,000 Des Moines employees because it could help the city save budget while enabling our employees to be more productive. When I looked at Google Apps again, I was struck by the tremendous product enhancements made in just a year since I last reviewed its offering.

We quickly decided to move all 1,188 Columbia employees to Google Apps for Government after evaluating available email and communication solutions. With the help of Google Apps reseller Onix Networking, all city employees were flawlessly transitioned to Google Apps in April 2012.

The only comments I received were gratitude from our employees for finally being able to communicate and collaborate smoothly. Email and calendar just work, and other advanced collaboration features in Google Apps bring much more efficiency to our workplace. Eighty percent of our employees are mobile, such as police, fire and public works staff. They have been starving for mobile productivity for years. Now they can easily check email, documents, and sites from the field.  

Although most reasonable people dread an annual budget process, I’m actually looking forward to it this year because all 18 of our departments will be using a Google Site to collaborate and share information easily while preparing for the budget. This site also integrates a Google calendar that marks budget due dates with a countdown clock for all departments.

For Columbia, going Google is a force multiplier. With resources saved and productivity enhanced, our city employees are able to better focus on their core mission of serving citizens. Being a part of modernization efforts of both Columbia and Des Moines makes my job as a public servant meaningful. Facebook in Instagram Billion 1 tawh lei

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a popular photo-sharing app is worth far more: Facebook announced it is purchasing Instagram for $1 billion.

To put the sale in perspective, the Wall Street Journal's Dennis K. Berman tweeted: "Remember this day. 551-day-old Instagram is worth $1 billion. 116-year-old New York Times Co.: $967 million."

The purchase of the San Francisco-based photo-sharing app is the largest financial acquisition in Facebook's history and is being made in cash. The deal will be completed by June, according to the AP.

"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users," CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. "We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all."

In a move to reassure Instagram's growing audience of users, Facebook announced that it will continue to let Instagram operate independently. However, Facebook is hiring Instagram's 10 employees.

"We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience," Zuckerberg wrote. "We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook."

Wired reports the sale will yield huge earnings for Instagram's CEO Kevin Systrom, along with the company's co-founder and several investments firms that have provided financial backing for Instagram. Systrom reportedly owns 40 percent of the company, meaning he will take home $400 million from the sale. Co-founder Mike Krieger will earn about $100 million from his 10 percent ownership share.

‘How to delete your Instagram account’ and other Twitter reactions to Facebook’s $1B buy

Facebook's announcement on Monday that it had agreed to acquire Instagram, the popular social photo application for iPhone and Android devices, for $1 billion cash sparked a loud reaction online.

And as is the case with most breaking news, the best place to find instant commentary was not on Facebook. It was on Twitter, where some of Instagram's 30 million users expressed concern that the social network, which has long battled privacy concerns, would now have access to their uploaded Instagram photos.

"Uninstalling Instagram," Engadget co-founder Peter Rojas wrote in response to the news.

"Most of instagrammers I know are very anti- #instaface #facegram #facepalm," Jessica Plautzwrote.

Commenters took to posting on stories and on Twitter to highlight their fears of Facebook changing Instagram:

"The boutique app that I truly enjoyed using on a daily basis is going to fade out of my life into memory :(," @nyfashionhunter responded to a Wall Street Journal post about the sale.

Hundreds of tweeters disappointed by the merger could be found using the hashtag #facegram. BuzzFeed collected dozens more in a post titled "People Overreacting to Facebook Buying Instagram."

Even fake celebrities on Twitter were outraged.

"I can't believe Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion! The fun's over!" the user@BettyFckinWhite wrote. "Time to delete my Instagram account now. Also, what's Instagram?"

Meanwhile, tech blogs from Mashable to Time's Techland were soon offering tips for Instagram users on how to delete their accounts and export their images before the deal is finalized.

Others used the sale as fodder for jokes aimed at Facebook's founder.

"Zuckerberg bought Instagram because a girl didn't let him take her picture once," James Urbaniak wrote.

"Facebook buys Instagram for $1 billion," John Durso quipped. "Bankrupt Kodak put on suicide watch."
